Summer is around the corner but you are already dreaming of beach vacations with your dog. Sun, sea and wind: who doesn’t need it after the long winter at home? All of us, pet owners, would love to take our dogs to the beach! Here are some tips to take your friend to the beach having fun but safely.
1. Choose a dog-friendly beach
Always find out about the local rules of your destination. Unfortunately, in Italy there are many limitations for dog owners and you have to dig to find places where dogs are allowed both on the beach and in hotels. On this website you can find a very useful tool to find dog and pet-friendly beaches in Italy.
2. Be careful with the bath in the sea
We all imagine long swimming sessions with the dog in the sea; some dogs are skilled and some are not. Don’t assume that your dog because of having four legs and a tail, is an expert swimmer. If you notice that in general he does not like the waves and that he is uncomfortable on the shore, take into consideration that probably it still has to take a dog swimming course first. There are some very interesting ones that you can find near you through the magical Google.
3. Make sure it has fresh water and shade
For a dog, a walk on the beach can be a lot of fun, yet a simple walk can become a tough test and high temperatures can bring fatigue and dehydration. Be prepared with water bottles and a bowl for your dog and make sure it has shade where it can take a nap.
Besides, remember that the sea water is salty and even if your dog likes the way it tastes, it is not good for it and it would not be pleasant for your beach neighbours if your dog suddenly had a stomach ache!
4. Use sun protection
Dogs can also sunburn, especially if they have short white hair. As humans, dogs too are at risk of skin cancer. Buy specific sun protection such as our Duo Sun Kit.
Duo Sun is perfect for protecting the coat of dogs and cats from the damages caused by UV rays, saltpetre and chlorine. The moisturizing spray protects the natural colour of hair and skin that is exposed to UVA and UVB rays thanks to UV filters, Coralline Algae extract, apricot milk and melon water and other natural ingredients in the best Yuup style! It is not greasy or sticky and prevents the sand from itching. The moisturizing, refreshing and specific after-sun shampoo for hair and skin exposed for a long time to damage from the sun, the sea and chlorine, will allow you to clean quickly but thoroughly. Indispensable after a day of running and bathing on the beach!
5. Collect always its droppings!
Wow, how many stimuli and how many smells can be found on beach vacations with your dog! A paradise to discover!
Don’t be too confident even if before entering the beach, you have already taken your dog for a walk to relieve. Dogs are territorial and communicate with their droppings… and it is your duty not to leave any place in disorder. Many beaches where dogs are allowed, has available bags at the entrance but it is our duty to have enough and monitor the dog’s movements. Dog faeces are a problem not only for other visitors but also for fish and wildlife. Therefore, pick it up immediately to avoid contaminating the water and soil, and take extra bags and disinfectant wipes with you to clean it up afterwards.
Some extra common sense advice:
Plan ahead and take your dog to the beach during periods of less intense sun. Limit sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Rough seas or boat traffic, surfboards, or jet skis can scare your dog, so try finding an area with calm water.
Children have the same rights as your dog to run and play in the sand: be respectful and if there are children nearby, keep them on a leash as required by law.
Beware of objects hidden in the sand: broken glass, stones, fish hooks or dirt can be extremely dangerous for your dog.
Enjoy the summer with your pet! Don’t let it stay home waiting for you alone and sad. It is enough to have a little common sense, some preparation and so much desire to spend time with your pet!
