Summer has arrived and, just as every year, we are facing very high temperatures.
Not only people suffer from the heat, also dogs and cats do, and to top it off they cannot sweat and therefore have less chance of defending themselves when temperatures rise.
There are some mechanisms that our pets can initiate to lower their own body temperature – dogs pant with their tongues hanging out and cats spend more time than usual cleaning their hair to cool down a bit – but the most important thing is to take preventive measures.
In fact, excessive exposure to heat or sunlight can trigger heat stroke or sunburn in dogs and cats, which in both cases can manifest with specific symptoms, such as:
- Excessive panting
- Red gums and tongue
- Tremors
- Vomit
- Diarrhea
And so what do we do if our dog or cat is overheated?
Let’s see some remedy for the heat for dogs and cats.
Leave fresh water available
It is important to leave always fresh water at home, so that our pets can drink whenever they need it (and with high temperatures they will drink more than normal!).
Therefore, leave some bowls full of water distributed around the house, noting that the water is not too cold and keeping the water always fresh and clean.
Avoid air conditioning
Air conditioning is not the best for us either, and for this reason it is better to avoid air conditioning with dogs and cats, especially if they move freely from the house to the garden: in fact, it could create strong temperature changes, with unpleasant consequences for health.
It would be much better to use a fan to move the air and cool the environment: be careful not to point the fan directly at your pet!
Take it for a walk in the coolest hours
When it is very hot, it is better to go for a walk at times of the day when the sun is not too hot: such as early morning hours or towards sunset, and especially avoid walks at noon or in the early afternoon.
The choice of the place is also important: if possible, take your dog for a walk where cool shade is, shade from vegetation or buildings, and in general avoid walks that foresee too long stretches exposed to the sun.
Take always water with you
If you have to go out with your dog or your cat, on foot or by car, always remember to take a bottle of water with you, to quench your pet’s thirst even during the walk: in fact, with the heat we are more vulnerable to dehydration, also dogs and cats, and staying hydrated is essential to avoid heat stroke.
Protect them from the sun
Although avoiding the sunniest places is the best, sometimes it is not possible: in that case you can protect your dog or cat from the sun’s rays using specific products.
The Sun Protection Spray from Yuup! it is an excellent solution that protects hair and skin from UVA, UVB and infrared rays. It is easy to use: spray and style.
Be careful with the floor’s temperature!
We never consider the floor’s temperature because we always wear shoes or sandals, but our pets go everywhere “barefoot”, and when it is very hot they risk burning their paws walking on overheated surfaces.
Therefore, before letting the dog or cat out, check that the floor is not too hot by resting your hand on the floor for 15 seconds: if you can handle the temperature, surely your four-legged friend will too!
As a preventive measure, spread the Yuup! Protective Balm on the paws, ideal for protection from harmful agents such as cold, ice, heat and salt.
Wet them with water
Finally, to give them relief from the heat, wet the legs and head of your four-legged friend with water, better lukewarm or not cold.
There is nothing better when dogs and cats are hot!
